Slavery
I remember having an argument about slavery with a classmate more than a year ago. I was talking about the first slaves on the island of Puerto Rico being theĀ indigenousĀ ”tainos” who were distantly related to the south american indigenous. For some reason she believed that she would prove me wrong by stating that the first ever slaves were African. I admit this irritated me due to the fact that she believed she had won the argument by changing my subject to a completely different subject. In a book I was reading called “Crimes against logic” this would be a type of fallacy, to attempt to win an argument by stating a fact that has to do with another subject altogether. After the argument I became interested in finding out if it was true. Slavery has existed since the beginning of society and I’m not sure if slavery was originated in northern Africa, or south Europe, or even in western Asia. All three of these have been known for having slavery since very early years in history. So I used google search. And I found an article that someone had posted stating that the first slaves in history were white in the 1500’s. Once again, slavery goes way back in history, like prostitution and homosexuality. No, I am not saying that these are similar to each other, I am saying that these are three things that have existed long before laws were put against them, some laws were valid, while others were not. Slavery has been around for thousands of years and continues to (sadly) be a part of our world, but believe me, the 1500’s weren’t the beginning of slavery and the first slaves weren’t a bunch of “white people”. In any case, indigenous of islands and the USA were being used as slaves already so “white people” were not the first slaves. Who knows exactly when the first slaves were around? Definitely not whoever said the 1500’s….
